Metallurgical Services x

M.S.I. Metallurgical Systems, Inc. offers the following services individually or together as part of a turnkey operation providing a complete manufacturing plant with trained personnel capable of manufacturing top quality cemented tungsten carbides:

  • Writing specifications for new plant construction or specifications for modification of existing facilities.

  • Writing specifications for selection and purchase of all plant and research laboratory equipment.

  • Establishment of quality control program

  • Training of personnel in metallurgical technology, material processing, manufacturing procedures, quality control program and research and development techniques.

  • Training of Plant Manager to assume full control of the plant and laboratory.

  • Ongoing consultation on a fee basis.

  • The Metallurgical Technology offered consists of nine modules or steps and personnel are trained in each step.

MODULE I Qualification of incoming Raw Material:

Specifications are established and personnel trained in testing procedures to assure the sound metallurgical Properties of all raw material, i.e., tungsten, cobalt, nickel, etc.

MODULE II Attrition or Ball Milling:

Personnel are trained in the uniform blending and milling of metal constituents to obtain maximum performance of the sintered carbide. Correct milling ratios are established.

MODULE III Powder Preparation:

After proper milling the material is dried, waxed and pelletized. Personnel are trained in the use of vacuum process dryers to control the oxidation and in adding paraffin to give the material compacting substance.

MODULE IV Powder Qualification:

Test pieces are processed, presintered and sintered at the proper temperatures and are submitted to the laboratory for evaluation. Personnel will be trained in testing for: 1. Shrinkage,   2. Density,  3. Hardness,  4. Transverse Rupture Strength,  5. Relative Fracture Toughness,  6. Porosity Rating @ 200X,  7. Microstructure @ 1500X,  8. Coercive Force.

MODULE V Compaction:

Personnel are trained in the compacting or shaping of the material by hydraulic or mechanical means at pressures between 5 and 15 TSI.

MODULE VI Presintering:

Dewaxing and Hardening: Paraffin is removed from the material during the dewax cycle at temperatures between 300°c and 575°c. The hardening process occurs at temperatures of 650°c-750°c.

MODULE VII Sintering:

Personnel are trained in the sintering process, which is conducted in a vacuum sintering furnace or hydrogen reducing furnace at temperatures between 1310°c and 1480°c.

MODULE VIII Grinding and Finishing:

Personnel are trained in finish grinding, which is sometimes necessary to obtain final tolerances.

MODULE IX Inspection:

After grinding, the parts may be tumbled or sandblasted for deburring and cleaning purposes. Personnel are trained to test physical tolerances and to check for defects such as porosity, chips and chatter marks prior to packaging for shipment.
